Frampton Resident 1869 - 1901
(in Southover to begin with then Wessex Barn)
Information provided by Tony and Lyn Archer
James is pictured here aged about 90, with his daughter-in-law Mary Jane Fursey (nee Reed)
to return to main village site
from the 1881 census, Southover
They have a photo, taken in 1960, where the family were thought to live. However, going by the census records it would appear that they lived here when it was three cottages
They had also been told that the family lived here in the almhouses by 1901 but, in fact, according again to the census, it is likely that they lived at what is now Wessex Barn when it was at least four dwellings
One thing is certain, any of the children who went to school must have attended this one. And, sure enough, below is an account in 1964 of John Fursey, one year old at Southover in the 1881 Census
I had a query via the website re family interest in Frampton & Southover, Fortunately the enquiry came from Dorchester, Dorset this time, (it's usually the far flung corners of the globe) so I suggested they came out here with their information and I would take them round the neighbourhood. We had a lovely afternoon for a stroll round the village and Tony and Lyn Archer seemed to think it was a useful exercise.
So did I as I now have some interesting information for the Historical Society.
There was a possibility that they could have lived in what is now Thatchcote but a careful count of households made the odds on it being Wessex Barn
Being introduced to Queen Elizabeth in Maumbury Rings, Dorchester 3rd July 1952
